May 23, 2011 Shoe chain DSW to move into Sullivan Center by Sandra M. Jones, chicagotribune.com
Chicago, Ill. – DSW Shoe Warehouse Inc. finalized long-anticipated plans to move into the Sullivan Center on State Street in Chicago's Loop, next door to Target.
The discount shoe store signed a lease for 26,000 square feet at the center at 1 S. State St., formerly home to Carson Pirie Scott's flagship department store, according to Joseph Freed and Associates LLC, the building's landlord.
DSW plans to open in the spring of 2012. The retailer will occupy 5,000 square feet of space on the first floor and 21,000 square feet on the lower level.
After being protected by local landmark designation, a new owner, Joseph Freed and Associates, LLC, decided to restore all three buildings to their 19th-century appearance. Using historic photographs and analysis, the buildings’ cast iron storefronts were restored, including the discovery of a previously-undocumented 1903 Sullivan ornament.
With the DSW lease signed, about 77 percent of the 195,000-square-foot retail center will be occupied, Freed said.
Earlier this year, Target Corp. disclosed plans to open a store called City Target at the Sullivan Center, which has been empty since Carson's closed its flagship in 2007. The Target store is slated to open next year.
